The weekend is upon us! SK&H has compiled a list of fun things to do this weekend that don’t involve Pokemon GO. Among this weekend’s offerings are family friendly activities that everyone can enjoy and great events to take out-of-town guests who are curious about what makes our state so great. Better yet, several of them are free!  So get out there and have some fun!

Saturday Market Spiritsfest
Friday-Saturday, August 5 – 7, 2016

Spiritsfest, a celebration of alcohol spirits, is a weekend afternoon event at Waterfront Park. On Friday night Portland Saturday Market presents Unwind, an evening cocktail event at Ankeny Plaza in Old Town. Enjoy an evening with cocktails, food and the smooth sounds of 3 Leg Torso.

Cost: $8 online, $15 at door.

Pickathon Music Festival
Friday-Saturday, August 5 – 7, 2016

Pickathon offers a large lineup of diverse music (indie/roots, garage rock, folk, alternative country, bluegrass) on Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, with food vendors and camping. It also promotes ecology and recycling.

Cost: Tickets start at $25

Art In The Dark
7:30 pm, August 5 – 14, 2016

See an illuminated outdoor performance “full of traditional and invented aerial apparatus, athletic and technical dance movement, and acrobatics” at Art in the Dark at Mary S. Young Park in West Linn.

Cost: General admission is $15.

3- 9pm Saturday, August 6, 2016

Obonfest is a Japanese festival that commemorates ancestors with Obon dance, lanterns, children’s booths, Japanese food, beer, and sake, all at the Oregon Buddhist Temple. Don’t worry about knowing the dance before hand. An experienced instructor is there to lead the group!

Fremont Fest
10 am-5 pm Saturday, August 6, 2016

Fremont Street will be closed from 41st to 49th Avenue on Saturday for Fremont Fest, which includes a 10 a.m. Kids Bike & Pet Parade, music stages, a kids’ zone, and over 125 vendors. A pub crawl will also be taking place for those 21+.

Cost: Free.


Hot Sauce Expo
Saturday-Sunday,  August 6 – 7, 2016

Aren’t afraid of burning your tongue? Portland’s first annual Hot Sauce Expo has hot and spicy food vendors, craft beer, and a Chihuahua beauty contest at 1 p.m. Sat. If you’re feeling daring, you can also participate in one of the several heated contests, including the Guinness Book of Records Reaper Pepper Eating Challenge. All can be found in the OMSI parking lot.

Cost: Admission is $10 per day.

Tualatin Crawfish Festival
Saturday-Sunday, August 6-7, 2016

Tualatin Crawfish Festival will be sure to tame your thirst and hunger. There’ll be a cook-off, eating contests, Saturday parade, run and dog show, weekend beer & wine, a kids’ zone, and stage shows.

Cost: Free, but bring money for the food!
