Senator Ron Wyden visited the downtown Portland office of Stahancyk, Kent & Hook P.C. on Wednesday, October 27, 2010, to present senior shareholder Jody Stahancyk with the ESGR Patriot Awardand the Above and Beyond Award.
These awards, given by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), recognize employers who go above and beyond the legal requirements for granting leave to and supporting military personnel. Oregon Program Manager Dawn Taylor represented the ESGR in presenting the awards to Stahancyk. Ms. Taylor described the ESGR as “an agency of the Department of Defense that tries to promote a culture in which employers value and support the reservists that are working for them.”
Chief Petty Officer Lisa Zimmerman, who is both Stahancyk, Kent & Hook P.C.’s Senior Legal Assistant and an active member of the Navy Reserve, nominated Ms. Stahancyk for the Patriot Award. In her nominating statement, Chief Petty Officer Zimmerman describes Ms. Stahancyk’s support and encouragement of her Navy career.
Upon reading Chief Petty Officer Zimmerman’s impressive nominating statement, the ESGR found Ms. Stahancyk and Stahancyk, Kent & Hook P.C. well deserving of the Above and Beyond Award as well.
In his presentation speech, Senator Wyden, who was also a classmate of Ms. Stahancyk’s at the University of Oregon Law School, described the importance of employer support for reservists and military personnel. He called employers’ help of returning military employees a “soft landing.” He also stated that Oregon “couldn’t do what we do as a state, in terms of making a contribution to our country’s national security at a critical time… without employers like Jody.”
Ms. Stahancyk accepted the award on behalf of the entire Stahancyk, Kent & Hook P.C. firm. In her acceptance speech, she said, “This isn’t an award for me, it’s an award for every single person who works here because we all support Lisa in her military career… this is how you support each other when you’re part of a family, and every single person here is part of our family.”
Stahancyk, Kent & Hook P.C. employees and assorted guests attended the awards presentation, which was followed by a reception with Senator Wyden in the Stahancyk, Kent & Hook P.C. Portland office’s main conference room.
