James had a career in business management before going to law school, opening an managing an electronics recycling facility in Vancouver. As a law clerk in San Diego, he worked on transportation law cases regarding railroad safety. During law school, James interned at the San Diego Public Defender’s office in post-conviction relief.

In 2011, James served as the Director of Communications for the Cortez Racing Association. He volunteered at the Clean Slate Clinic in San Diego, which offers criminal record expungement and felony reductions in order to help clients re-enter society. James also volunteered for Stand Down, a program that serves homeless military veterans with a wide range of issues, included legal issues.
Sailboat racing! James has competed in hundreds of races and regattas on numerous boats. Most notably, he’s competed in the Rolex Big Boat Series, the North Offshore One Design Regatta, the Yachting Cup, and the Newport to Ensenada Regatta. When not on a boat, he takes backpacking trips with his family. He also likes to play volleyball and go on mountain biking excursions.
