National Council Of La Raza

2000 Annual Conference

Published: July 12, 2000

SAN DIEGO, CA - The National Council of La Raza 2000 Annual Conference, La Onda Latina, opened in San Diego as a positive, historic event. It was the first conference of the 21st Century, the century that Hispanic America will come into its own. As nearly every workshop presenter stated, we are the largest, youngest, fastest growing minority group in the U.S.
The potential to influence the future of this country, as voters, as workers, as consumers, as entrepreneurs, is just now beginning to be realized. Raul Yzaguirre said "We are at a crossroads, and we need to realize the opportunity that is before us, and use it to our advantage. We cannot afford to squander it."

The conference always has a wide range of workshops, and this year was no different. It always has a variety of well-known and prominent speakers from within our community, and it was true again this year.

The participants in the NCLR Student Leadership Institute perhaps were the greatest benefactors, from looking and listening to them during their debate session. It was all there, the attendees, government leaders, entertainers, exhibits, a health fair, business and community leaders. Big name entertainers came, speaking our language, reciting bits of our culture, recently learned. The commemoration to honor those who died crossing the border was a moving ceremony, yet done with taste and class. The conference was all in the NCLR's tradition of excellence, in honoring and showcasing the richness of Latino Culture.
